KHARTOUM, SUDAN – Women throughout Sudan are crossing party and regional lines to raise their collective voice for a more peaceful and secure Sudan.

DP Women - Intifada Camp: Displaced women stand together in
the Intifada transit camp in South Darfur.

As the second anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) approaches, Sudan and its international partners are evaluating progress toward implementing that landmark accord. From November 8 through 12, The Initiative for Inclusive Security will convene some of Sudan’s most distinguished women leaders, including members of the Government of National Unity (GNU), Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), and civil society leaders. Together, they will create an agenda to ensure that women are fully included in implementing the CPA.

These women leaders will present their agenda and begin advocating for their recommendations at a formal dinner on the evening of November 12 in Khartoum. Their audience will include policy makers from the GNU, the GOSS, the United Nations, the United States government, and other donor countries. (Members of the media are invited to attend, but must RSVP with Katie Elbert, Katie_Elbert@huntalternatives.org.)

What remains of a school after an attack. Most of the children
who sat in this place of education may never open a book
again.

In Sudan, women comprise 65 percent of the population, and up to 75 percent in areas most affected by the conflict. They are integral to rebuilding, reforming, and revitalizing the life of the country, yet they have been underrepresented in peace building efforts.

Carla Koppell, director of The Initiative for Inclusive Security said, “sustainable peace in Sudan will not be possible without the commitment and contributions of women. We must capitalize on their unique skills and insights for this critical peace agreement to succeed. We hope that by convening this group of influential women in Khartoum, we will amplify their voices and build momentum for peace.”

Following this conference, Inclusive Security will work with participants to continue advocating their forward looking agenda with policymakers in the GNU, GOSS, United Nations Mission in Sudan, World Bank, US government, and other donors.

Six years ago the United Nations Security Council acknowledged that women have a key role in promoting international stability by passing Resolution 1325 (2000). It called on all parties to ensure women’s participation in peace processes, from the prevention of conflict to negotiations and reconstruction. The Security Council reaffirmed the importance of women’s inclusion in Sudanese reconstruction when resolution 1590 established the United Nations Mission in Sudan and specifically mandated “a national inclusive approach, including the role of women, towards reconciliation and peace building.” These resolutions are important steps, but must be enacted.

Inclusive Security has supported Sudanese women peace builders since 1999 through consultations and training in Washington, DC, Boston, Oslo, Nairobi, and Khartoum.

The Initiative for Inclusive Security, a program of Hunt Alternatives Fund, advocates for the full participation of all stakeholders, especially women, in peace processes. Creating sustainable peace is achieved best by a diverse, citizen-driven approach. Of the many sectors of society currently excluded from peace processes, none is larger—or more critical to success—than women. Since 1999, Inclusive Security has connected more than 450 women experts with over 3,000 policy shapers to collaborate on fresh, workable solutions to long-standing conflicts across the globe. inclusivesecurity.org

Nearly a quarter of Cameroonian women are said to have experienced the practice – whereby heavy or hot objects are placed on a young girls breasts in an effort to keep them from growing. Many well-intentioned mothers believe it prevents the on-set of puberty, and may prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Dr. Robinson Mbu is an obstetrician gynecologist at Cameroon’ s principal maternity in Yaoundé. Concerned about possible dangerous after-effects, English to Africa reporter Angel Tabe asked him more about the unusual practice of breast ironing. “ Breast ironing, from what we understand, is a practice where during the period when the breasts start (developing)… before puberty, some people believe that when you use hot water… a warm spoon… and massage the breasts, they will either shrink or not develop the way they are supposed to.”

Water

In the still of night - I have closed my eyes, trying to imagine
pursuing my daily life without water and the access to a toilet.
Basically, the thought of being without water or a toilet is
rather frightening.

This creek provides one of the very few sources of water for rural
families to wash, bath and consume without choice. This water
is very saturated in urine, feces and many other contaminates.

I've consumed and frivolously wasted a lot of water over the years.
Perhaps just like me, it has been your same experience, thinking
that you could never be so unfortunate not to have access to a
nicely chilled bottle of Arrowhead Spring water or access to a private
sanitized place to bath or relieve your self..

Here we are in the 21-century faced with the harsh reality
that there are human beings, tender children who won't
even take in enough water today to stay alive. How could this be?
It seems so unfathomable.

Beyond the approach which is being pursued by others, I want
to take an in depth look at why the water and sanitation issue
remains in what I call a state of " Code Red ".

Here's a coincidence, earlier this year I had a concerning
discussion with one of my colleagues from Cameroon regarding
the inadequate sanitation facilities in the cities and rural
communities. I was also put on alert regarding the drastic
conditions relating to safe drinking water and the increase in
disease, allegedly due to water contamination.

Village women fetches water from well in the Obili area of Yaounde.
While water borne disease is quit common, This is the only means
of providing water for the family.

I admit that I have been slow to react as a constituent of the media
community. I deserve to be held to a flame for not responding in a
timely, respectful manner to the fundamental need - to stand up for
the human rights of all those who have fallen victim to what is nothing
less than a political, economic, immoral scandal.

Water is clearly the dividing line between poverty and prosperity.

On March 19, 2006, UN-Habitat and the African Development Bank
signed a Memorandum of understanding to improve urban water
sanitation in African cities in coming years with bank funding worth
500 million US dollars.

The memorandum was signed at the Africa Regional Day
World Water Forum in Mexico City by the Executive Director
of UN-Habitat, Mrs. Anna Tibaijuka and the President of
African Development Bank, Mr. Donald Kaberuka.

The financial focus was suppose to benefit Asia and 13 other
countries in Africa such as Mozambique, Ethiopia, Zambia,
Cameroon Burkina Faso, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Ghana,
Senegal, Nigeria, Cote D"lvoire, Mali and Tanzania.

This is what is commonly known as an "outhouse". There are usually no
means to sanitizing them or remove waste in a healthy manner.
Odors are prominent and create respiratory issues.

I'm not sure if any funding has actually gone out to any of these
countries, but I would like to expedite an investigation, particularly
where Cameroon is concerned.

Sense the financial commitment between UN-Habitat and the
African Development Bank, Cameroon has had to face a very
disheartening disaster. On November 2, 2006, a Cholera outbreak
killed at least 28 people in Cameroon's far north province,
neighboring Lake Chad. Public Health authorities attributed the
outbreak to the lack of potable drinking water and living conditions,
which forced people to fetch water from contaminated sources.
The vast toll occurred in the Logone and Chari divisions.

The provincial delegate for Public Health participated in an
emergency meeting in Kousseri, the capital of the far north
province, in order to seek out a solution to the crisis.

In 2005, a Cholera outbreak killed more than 800 people across
several countries in the region. The bacterium had spread through
contact with feces. This in part was associated with heavy rains,
which had flooded latrines and contaminated drinking water.

Here is a tremendous amount of waste which continues to build up in a rural area
where children and families have to face this indignant site. Where there's poor
sanitation, disease follows.

Based on the ethics of my own mission, and as a member of Panos
London, I am committed to making an ever more effective case that
communication really is the 'pulse' of development, and to promoting
the voices of poor and marginalized communities in the developing
world.

So... I promise all those in the developing communities
that I will contribute to the security of every human being having
the right to water, the right to an uncontaminated environment. Count
on me contacting the US Embassy in Cameroon and the Cameroon
Embassy in Washington, not questioning why.... but why not?

Mr. Damien Mbarga samples water for toxic run-off which is polluting
The Prim8 Fund will maintain an innovative fundraising policy as it focuses most of its resources towards the protection of the less fortunate, "technology for prosperity" and creative education installed in under developed communities.
-----------
